Forming a diplomatic partnership with righteous Apache leader Cochise (Jeff Chandler, in a formidable, Oscar nominated role), Jeffords later falls in love with an Indian girl who he marries in an Apache ceremony. He then brokers a three month truce with Cochise that is broken by renegade settler attacks before a lasting peace treaty is renewed.
